He held His peace!

The day when Jesus stood alone

And felt the hearts of men like stone,

And knew he came but to atone -

That day "He held His peace."

They witnessed falsely to His word,

They bound Him with a cruel cord,

And mockingly proclaimed Him Lord;

"But Jesus held His peace."

They spat upon Him in the face,

They dragged Him on from place to place,

They heaped upon Him all disgrace;

"But, Jesus held His peace."

My friend, have you for far much less,

With rage, which you called righteousness,

Resented slights with great distress?

Your Saviour "held His peace."

"Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me."

Jim Elliot

ONE DAY AT A TIME

One day at a time, and the day is His day;
He hath numbered its hours, though they haste or delay
His grace is sufficient; we walk not alone;
As the day, so the strength that He giveth His own.

Annie Johnson Flint

Hold us in quiet through the age-long minute
While Thou are silent, and the wind is shrill:
Can the boat sink while Thou, dear Lord, art in it?
Can the heart faint what waiteth on They will?

Amy Carmichael

In Heavenly Love Abiding

In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear.
And safe in such confiding, for nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid,
But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?

Wherever He may guide me, no want shall turn me back.
My Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack.
His wisdom ever waking, His sight is never dim.
He knows the way He’s taking, and I will walk with Him

Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen.
Bright skies will soon be over me, where darkest clouds have been.
My hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free.
My Savior has my treasure, and He will walk with me.

The Weaver

My life is but a weaving
Between my Lord and me,
I cannot choose the colors
He worketh steadily.

Oftimes He weaveth sorrow,
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I, the underside.

Not till the loom in silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver's skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

Father, I know that all my life
Is portioned out for me,
And the changes that are sure to come
I do not fear to see:
I ask Thee for a present mind,
Intent on pleasing Thee.

I would not have the restless will
That hurries to and fro
Seeking for some great thing to do
Or secret thing to know;
I would be treated as a child
And guided where I go.

Wherever in the world I am,
In whatsoe'er estate,
I have a fellowship of hearts
To keep and cultivate.

I ask Thee for daily strength
To none that ask denied,
A mind to blend the outward life,
While keeping at Thy side;
Content to fill a little space,
If Thou be glorified.

There are briers besetting every path,
That call for patient care;
There is a cross in every lot,
And an earnest need for prayer;
But a lowly heart that leans on Thee
Is happy anywhere.

In service which thy will appoints
There are no bonds for me;
For my inmost heart is taught the truth
That makes thy children free.
A life of self-renouncing love
Is one of liberty.

Anna L. Waring 1850

DYING TO SELF

When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you do not sting and hurt with the insult, but your heart is happy being counted worthy to suffer for Christ's sake..........that is DYING TO SELF.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed,when your advice is disregarded and your opinion is ridiculed, and yet you refuse to let anger rise in your heart, or even to defend yourself but instead take it all in patient, loving silence........that is DYING TO SELF.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder and irregularity, or annoyance; when you stand face to face with waster, folly, extravagance,spiritual insensibility, and you endure it as Jesus endured........that is DYING TO SELF.

When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, any society, any clothing, any interruption by the will of God........ that is DYING TO SELF.

DELIVER ME JESUS
---from the desire to be praised, honored, glorified, preferred, consulted, or approved.
Deliver me, Jesus, from the fear of being humiliated, criticized, forgotten, ridiculed,
maltreated, and from the fear of what others think. O Jesus, give me the grace to desire:
that others would be loved and esteemed ahead of me, that in the eyes of the world they
would increase while I decrease, and praised while I pass by unnoticed; that others would
be preferred in all situations; that others would become more than myself - in order that I
would be as holy as You want me to be. Charles de Foucauld.
